Ciudad de México

B. The Wandering Scholar

There are those trips that take you for a whirlwind adventure, but it is so quick and fleeting it leaves you yearning for one more day. That was Ciudad de México, or also known as Mexico City. This trip was gift to my other half because they have not been back in 22 years and that needed to change.

The journey there was colorful to say the least. Living in the city of Phoenix is great in the winter, but lately not so much for those of us who love to travel globally. The pricing for two round trip from Phoenix was nearing $2000, but through some sleuthing I was able to purchase two round trip tickets for $480 round trip nonstop. The only catch it was out of Las Vegas, Nevada on the airline, Viva Aerobús.

So with tickets purchased it was time to prepare for our adventure. We grabbed a rental for 150 that's including gas, which isn't bad. We got to Mcarren with time to wait and that's what we did. Viva Aerobús is bang for your buck, but except to wait in line. It took us roughly hour and an half to get checked in because there was only 2 attendants working the desk.

After checking in and through security it was time to board. The flight was a little bumpy on take off and landing. The seats were comfortable enough for the roughly 3 hour flight.

Once in town, we hit the ground running. Staying at the NH Hotel in Centro Histrico, which was a great deal. Because my other half family is there we had a personal tour guide of sorts, which added an intimacy and different lens to the city. This city is so unique in the fact it is so crowded but moves fluidly, while sitting in traffic, which is a lot I noticed the lack of horns honking. It was the delicate and sometimes aggressive dance in which everyone knows where to go and how they fit in this intricate dance. Having a local be our guide, I saw the different aspects of the city the working neighborhoods as well as the artistic neighborhoods, but the ongoing beautiful encounters in each place. Mexico City is like any city in the United States in my opinion so make sure to be aware of your surrounding. There is good spots as well as bad so I recommend exercising common sense. My Spanish is okay at best, but I still attempted to utilize it and everyone was very grateful that I tried. Even when merging my French with Spanish to make its own unique spin .

The food was an experience of its own and will be getting highlighted in its own post. Make sure to book a tour going to Teotihuacan. The tour we found was on the site Viator, which is an awesome app and website to find niche cool tours. It started at 7 AM, which wasn't bad it gave us a chance to check the cafe nearby for an amazing coffee and ended around 3 PM. The tour is amazing and intimate with a great guide.

Another great must do activity is Xochimilco , the Venice of Mexico City is a description, but can't fully describe the experience. Colorful flat boats cruising along these canals where you can purchase souvenirs, food, beer, and be serenaded by Mariachis. The cost to rent a boat for your party is roughly $26 for 3 hours of fun, conversation, and laughs. Mexico City will be seeing us again soon.
